Nominations for the Kapiti Coast Civic Awards are called once a year, usually in September with successful nominees receiving their award at a function in October. Recipients receive a plaque as acknowledgement of their contributions to the Kapiti community.
Criteria
- any person who has carried out meritorious voluntary service for the benefit of the District
- any resident of the District who has made a significant contribution to the welfare of others within New Zealand or overseas
- any voluntary organisation whose support has significantly assisted the Kapiti Coast District community in some way, either on one, or over several occasions
- any person from the District whose personal achievements in their particular field are so outstanding as to deserve special recognition by way of a Civic Award
- preference will be given to people who have not received recognition in the form of New Year’s or Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Nominations need to address:
- the record of service of the individual or the nature of their achievement
- what tangible service they have provided to the community
- how they have added to the quality of life on the Kapiti Coast or, if they carried out their work outside Kapiti, in what areas
- why their contribution is significant compared to others
- who has benefited from their work.
It is important that nominations contains as much detail as possible as the judges have only the application to assist them in making a decision.

Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards 2008
RECOGNISING COMMUNITY GROUPS WORKING IN THE COMMUNITY

Presented by the Kapiti Coast District Council in association with The Community Trust of Wellington and Wellington International Airport.
Wellington International Airport Limited, in partnership with The Community Trust of Wellington, and the five local authorities in the area have joined together to recognise the voluntary work carried out in the Wellington region.
The focus of the Awards is to ensure the wider community is aware of the voluntary work undertaken and to recognise and provide some reward for the valuable contributions made by volunteers and their organisations.
Eligibility
1. Any not-for-profit group or organisation working in the interests of the community can be nominated.
2. An individual may nominate an organisation of which they are a member.
3. The Awards are designed to recognise past achievements.
4. Commercial organisations are excluded, but this does not exclude groups who have used professionals to support the delivery of services undertaken by volunteers.
Criteria
Key factors considered during judging are:
• volunteer input
• utilisation of resources
• initiative and creativity
• effectiveness of activities
• impact of the activity on the local area or district.
Categories
Nominations to be submitted under one of the following categories:
A. HERITAGE & ENVIRONMENT
Improvement or revitalising of the environment, culture or heritage.
B. HEALTH & WELLBEING
Provide services which enhance the social wellbeing of people.
C. ARTS & CULTURE
Enhance and increase participation in arts and creative leisure activities.
D. SPORT & LEISURE
Increase participation and enjoyment in physical sport, leisure activities and recreational pursuits.
E. EDUCATIONAL & CHILD/YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Improve and enhance the educational and social development of children and youth.
Note: If in the judges' view a nomination meets the criteria for consideration under another category, the judges reserve the right to transfer the nomination to that category.
Judging Process/Winners
A judging panel in each of the five local authority areas will select category winners who will receive $500 and a certificate. From these category winners, one overall winner for that area will also be selected, receiving an additional $500 and certificate. These awards will be announced and presented at functions hosted by the local Mayor.
The category winners from each local authority areas will be invited an awards function at Wellington Airport. Before the event, a judging panel will select a winner from each category. These winners receive a further $500 and a framed certificate. These awards will be announced and presented at the Wellington Airport Function.
Also at the awards function at Wellington Airport, the five overall winners selected at the local authority judging will make a short presentation about their organisation. A judging panel will select a supreme winner from these five presentations. The supreme winner will receive $1000, a framed certificate, and a trophy that is held for one year.
The supreme winner will represent the region at the TrustPower National Awards.
Nominations
1. Nominations must be made on the official form. Additional supporting information will also be accepted.
2. A panel nominated by your local Council will judge the nominations.
3. An Awards presentation will be held at a Mayoral function in your local authority area on the following dates.

College Community Awards for Secondary School Students
The Kapiti Coast District Council honours the community service and achievements of students attending Kapiti, Otaki and Paraparaumu Colleges at a public ceremony held each year in October.
Each College may nominate 10 students: two from each year level, Year 9 to Year 13.
Criteria
These are service awards and the recipients must have demonstrated over a sustained period:
- a positive, helpful attitude in their everyday school and community life
- a willingness to go out of their way to help and support others, show positive influence and leadership in a variety of situations and overcome negative pressures
- an ongoing commitment to a group, team or activity, either in school or out in the wider community. This could be a sports team, cultural group, choir, orchestra, band, youth group, environment group, service club, etc.
Students nominated will be recognised by their peers as demonstrating these characteristics.
