Kapiti Coast District Council has made a major commitment in its Community Plan, Kapiti Coast: Choosing Futures, to supporting local democratic processes that are open and transparent, and supportive of community involvement in
decision-making.

The focus is on:
- building positive relationships with the community
- advocating on behalf of the community, including young people, older people and people with disabilities
- community involvement in decision-making
- enabling the community to act independently.
That commitment includes ensuring the following:

- by-laws (click here)
- computer based information systems:
- GIS mapping (click here)
- library reference systems;
- Community involvement in:
- developing and reviewing the Community Plan
- developing local community outcome statements
- community design processes
- developing key policies
- the development of the Wellington Regional Strategy.
Kapiti Coast District Council seeks to create a better understanding of local democratic processes, and to encourage people's greater participation in decision-making. A monitoring programme is being developed and some key measures are already set out in the Community Plan.
