Code of Conduct

This Code of Conduct has been adopted by the Kapiti Coast District Council as a guide to Elected Members (Mayor, Councillors and Community Board Members) on the standards of behaviour expected of them in their conduct of public affairs.

Elected Members of the Kapiti Coast District Council expect to receive, and demand of themselves and of others, a high level of respect, integrity and appropriate conduct. They are responsible for maintaining an acceptable standard of professionalism and regard for others. They also have many legislative responsibilities and some of these responsibilities are not very clearly prescribed.

In the interests of clarity and fairness, therefore, and to protect the integrity of elected people who by the very nature of their public position are more vulnerable and accountable than most people, it has been agreed to have available a Code of Conduct which will provide guidance to the conventions, principles and legislative requirements for Elected Members of the Kapiti Coast District Council and make that guidance available to each incoming Council and Community Board.

The Code addresses:

• Legislative Responsibilities
• Council Conventions
• Principles of Behaviour.

The Code of Conduct is being reviewed in 2007.
