THE GREATER

OTAKI

PROJECT

THE GREATER

OTAKI

PROJECT

The Otaki Local Outcomes - Greater Otaki Vision is the result of the work of many people.

Residents and businesspeople from the Greater Otaki community have participated in a number of design workshops since the initial Choosing Futures process in 2004 - all with the aim of building a clear picture of a desired future direction for the Otaki community.

The resulting document represents a vision for that direction that encompasses many facets of the Greater Otaki community:

  • the wellbeing of children and young people
  • the natural environment (including a fresh water and coastal vision)
  • protection of local heritage
  • transportation
  • rural productivity
  • growth and design of the railway area and Main Street
  • industrial development

The Greater Otaki Outcomes (2.3mb)

Brochure summarising the Project (488kb)

The draft document was introduced at a gala celebration event held in the Otaki Memorial Hall on 7 October 2006, and attended by more than 200 people.

One person who was involved with the project from the start wrote to the Council and her views capture the essence of what the Council and the Otaki community are working towards:

"The outcome looks awesome and the shared collective ideas of the community participation is something of which we should be proud and indeed celebrate. The result is an example of the positive feelings we have for our community and local area as we move forward into a future in which we can share and respond to the precious things in our various cultures, with a mutual respect for one another.

'It is a legacy we will leave to our children and grandchildren in the hope that they will have an awareness of the enormous thought that has gone into this and will want to continue in its spirit and endeavour to change and improve the principle to suit the needs of the times in which they live."

The Council is now making amendments to the document following final community consultation.

Latest newsletter - August 2007 (6 pages, 143kb)

The Council is currently consulting on a Subdivision rules Plan Change proposal for Otaki as well as changes to building height requirements at Otaki Beach.  This is an informal process at this stage and written submissions and comments are welcome.

The Otaki Lake Project (814Kb) is progressing separately but alongside the overall Otaki Vision.
