Book a Bike Locker

Bike lockers for cycle commuters who use the train on a regular basis are provided on a non-profit basis by the Greater Wellington Regional Council to encourage the use of passenger transport. Bike lockers are a secure place to leave both your cycle and gear.

Bookings:
The booking system is administered in Kapiti by the Kapiti Coast District Council. A locker and its key are issued to you for a four monthly period as follows:

  • Beginning August to end November
  • Beginning December to end March
  • Beginning April to end July.

Cost:
$50 Key Deposit: refundable on return of key;
$10 Administration Fee: for four months use or part thereof and non-refundable.

As there is a waiting list for lockers, preference is given to regular commuters with monthly travel passes, which must be produced at the time of key issue.

Because demand for the lockers exceeds supply, the Council uses a master key to regular spot check lockers to monitor their use. Preference for rebooking is given to cyclists who regularly use their lockers.

In the last month of each four month period, a note is posted inside each locker to invite existing regular users to rebook if there is no waiting list.

If it is apparent that the locker is consistently unused, a note will advise the keyholder to contact the Council. If we do not hear from the keyholder before the start of the next booking period, the lock will be changed and the locker re-issued to somebody on the waiting list.

Kapiti Cycling Incorporated

Kapiti Cycling Inc. is a cycle advocacy group set up by and for cyclists on the Kapiti Coast to promote and encourage cycling.

The Waikanae River is a popular place for walking, cycling and horse-riding. Horse-riders may ride along the south bank of the river by entering the bridleway at Otaihanga Domain.

Cycleways, Walkways & Bridleways Strategy

Ensuring good cycling, walking and horse-riding facilities as well as the provision of good linkages and connections within the District is important to many residents and the Council, and so it has been included in the Community Plan.
