The white ventilated box alongside the Otaki Visitor Information Centre contains an automatic temperature gauge which transmits the air temperature on a minute-by-minute basis to a remote MetService recorder. This provides the Kapiti temperature used on the television weather reports each evening.
Kapiti’s temperatures are taken at the Otaki site and at the Paraparaumu airport site. The MetService uses the higher temperature of the two for television weather reports. The gauge is owned by the Kapiti Coast District Council and serviced by the MetService.
