Neighbours Day

We believe building good neighbour relationships is a powerful way to create happier and healthier communities. The 'Over the Fence Cuppa’ initiative is held to celebrate Neighbours Day in Kāpiti over a weekend in March each year.

In 2016, Paraparaumu topped more than 100 towns and cities across the country to win the first ever Neighbours Day Aotearoa Town of the Year title. In 2017, we are looking for more and more neighbours to get in and celebrate Neighbours Day to help make Kāpiti the most neighbourly place to live in the country!

What is an 'Over the Fence Cuppa' event?

'Over the Fence Cuppas' are small get-togethers in local neighbourhoods organised by neighbours within those communities. Organising a cuppa event is great opportunity to get to know your neighbours better and have fun doing so.

Cuppa events can take place in peoples homes or at the local park. It may be a morning tea, afternoon tea, evening supper or anything in between. Neighbourhoods might choose have a theme and plan some fun activities like swapping home grown produce, getting creative with chalk on the footpath, or simply eat cake and chat. There are heaps of great ideas on the Neighbours Day site.

Over the Fence Cuppa groups:

  • involve people who live in the Kāpiti Coast District
  • involve at least five households who live on the same street
  • are held on Neighbours Day weekend – either 25 or 26 March
  • recieve support, tips and resources to organise their event
  • recieve a care pack including Neighbours Day resources, refreshment vouchers and other goodies
  • receive follow up support after the event to see how it went and follow up information for all attendees to help neighbours stay connected
