Civil Defence Challenge: Waikanae Beach


Are You and Your Neighbours Prepared for Anything?

After needing to postpone in February due to bad weather, the Civil Defence Challenge will now go ahead on March 19th from 10am-1pm.

Groups of neighbours, friends, whanau and clubs are invited to put their disaster preparedness to the test by taking part in an event morphs Top Town, The Great Race and Survivor promising to be an afternoon of fun for teams and spectators.

Addressing the theme of Civil Defence there will be short-fire challenges that address the five Critical Needs of a disaster:

  • checking on people and damage

  • medical assistance

  • shelter

  • water

  • food

Challenges will include:

  • foraging to build maps of your neighbourhoods on the beach

  • beach races

  • survival skills including building an emergency loo

It's a family friendly afternoon winding up with a sausage sizzle and ace prizes thanks to Siggy's Pies, Juli Hunter, Waimea Cafe, Long Beach, Kiss and Bake Up, Nga Manu Nature Reserve, Waikanae Estury Bird Tours, WREMO and New Zealand Home Loans.
