Waikanae Library

The Waikanae Library building is to be redeveloped and increased in floor area to provide capability for increasing population over the next 10 years from the current catchment area of approximately 10,000 people to 15,000 people.
The Waikanae library redevelopment is to focus on the following issues:
- A modern interior, incorporating aspects of the local community character. Provide familiarity and ease of use for customers who use a number of the branch libraries, but distinct enough to reflect the uniqueness of the location and local culture.
- Consideration and forethought for the relationship with, and possible future integration with the adjacent Mahara Gallery and shopping precinct.
- A possible integration of library and Council Service Centre at one public counter facility.
- Compliance with all aspects of the New Zealand Building code and relevant Standards, with particular emphasis on accessibility and customers with disabilities.
- Expansion of existing internet and Wi-Fi facilities to provide increased seated positions.
- Larger public areas for use as meeting or community gatherings with access to audio visual equipment.
- An area for the display of wall hung artwork
- Environmental improvements to lighting and HVAC. Providing even temperatures and window treatment where necessary.
- Improved and monitored security throughout the spaces.
