The 2008 Kapiti Sustainable Home & Garden Show

Everyone a winner at Show

Kapiti’s Sustainable Home and Garden Show on April 5 and 6 provided nearly 7000 people with a different view of the Kapiti Coast and put meaning into that hard to define term, “sustainability”.  From wearable art to weaving, a waterless carwash to no-dig gardens, slim line water tanks to low volume shower heads, there was something of value for everyone to take away.

Feedback from exhibitors and from the community was very positive.

Margaret Hayward (above left) an internationally renowned author of rose books, now takes a sustainable approach to gardening. A coastal resident for the last seven years, she has swapped her passion for roses to succulents. “ They use less fertiliser, less water and don't have to be sprayed,” said Dr Hayward. “This is a great event for Kapiti. I hope it’s repeated.” The bucket display demonstrated  the amount of water used by a sprinkler in an hour.

“The decision to broaden the Show to give it a sustainable focus is a key to the Show’s success,” organiser Ben Thompson said. “And we were able to showcase many of the services and operations of the Council.  Staff got involved.   Everyone got behind the show.“

Tangata whenua had a strong presence at this show.  Otaki weaver, Toni Thatcher said,  “All the korero (talk) happening was very interesting and so motivating.  I know people who sat there listening almost all day. It was awesome hearing those people talking who are so passionate about saving our environment.

The Recycled Fashion Show and the Wearable Art Fashion Show concepts created by Living Communities duo, Caroline Tia and Bronagh Maloney drew a great response from local schools.
