Your Rates Responsibilities in a Property Sale
In a property sale, it is the responsibility of the seller's solicitor to ensure that a Notice of Sale is supplied to the Rates Office. The Council can't change the ownership record of the Rating Unit (property) which appears on the Rate Invoice until the Property Title has been amended.
If you sell your property but the Rates Invoice is still in your name, it indicates that the Notice of Sale has not been received by the Council and you should contact your solicitor immediately.
Meanwhile, payment of the Rates Invoice remains the seller's responsibility, although they may be entitled to reimbursement from the property buyer for their period of new occupation.
- Direct credit customers: when your property is sold, please cancel your direct credit authority with your bank.
- Direct debit customers: your direct debit arrangement with the Council will be terminated upon receipt of the property's Notice of Sale. The Council will arrange this.
