Trade Waste Management

There has been an enormous increase in businesses operating in Kapiti over the past few years and this has increased the amount of wastes being discharged to the sewer system. Sewer networks are designed for domestic wastes. Trade waste discharges (unless controlled) can put greater pressure on the sewer network and may cause serious problems to the network, treatment plants, pumping stations and the people working in them.

Trade Waste Bylaw

After extensive surveys of businesses throughout Kapiti, and after a public consultation process, the Council introduced the Trade Waste Bylaw 2007 (PDF, 44 pages, 185 KB) in January. The bylaw came into effect on 14 March 2008 and is similar to that of other local authorities throughout New Zealand.

The bylaw allows businesses to dispose of trade waste to the sewer system provided the trade waste complies with the Bylaw and that the premises are registered and inspected. There are costs associated with this.

The aim of the bylaw is to protect the community’s assets and prevent problems. The bylaw specifies that certain standards of quality are met by each commercial discharger limiting the amount of solids, fats, chemicals, etc that are discharged.

The Council works with all trade waste dischargers on the Kapiti Coast to implement the bylaw. If we can help you understand the bylaw and its implications please contact our Trade Waste Officer.
