Western end of Ōtaki Main Street closed July 10 to 13

Thursday 07 July 2011

The section of Ōtaki Main Street between Matene and Te Rauparaha Streets will be closed to through traffic from Sunday (July 10) to Wednesday (July 13) to enable pouring of concrete beams for the raised vehicle crossing at the extreme western end of Main Street.

Project Engineer Giles Griffith says the full road width needs to be closed because the concrete beams either side of the raised crossing need to be poured in one go.  Three days allows time for the concrete to harden so as to take traffic.

The eastern part of the road section will still remain open to traffic, with a turn around area outside Memorial Gardens.

“There will be detour signs taking through traffic around the roads north of the site.

“East bound traffic has been using the detour of Te Rauparaha, Hadfield and Matene Streets for some time.  Just for this period, west bound traffic heading towards the beach, will have to follow the same route.

“A traffic management programme has been worked out and personnel will be in place to put it into effect.  There will also be signs to make the detour clear,” Mr Griffiths said.

“Council is working with the contractor to ensure the disruption is as short and as little as possible.

“This step in the project is a major one which will bring us much closer to the completion of all the work at the western end of the town centre upgrade on Main Street.”
