Te Roto Road shares winnings

Wednesday 25 January 2012

Te Roto Road of Ōtaki, winner of the Kāpiti Coast’s Greenest Street Competition 2010/11, has decided to donate its winnings to twelve community organisations.

Te Roto Road won the title by not only reducing its average environmental footprint but also by impressing the judges with its community spirit. The street received $3000, which it had the option of spending on a school, community organisation or street project of its choice.

Residents decided that instead of using the money themselves they’d prefer to distribute it to a range of community organisations. The twelve groups chosen to share the funds include: Ōtaki College, Waitohu School, Te Horo School, Ōtaki Montessori, Ōtaki Health Camp, Arohanui Hospice, Friends of the Ōtaki River, Ōtaki Volunteer Fire Brigade, Ōtaki St John’s, Riding for the Disabled – Levin, and Speld Mana Association.

Four streets participated in the 2010/11 round of the competition – Te Roto Road, ‘Kakariki Street’, Paekākāriki (an amalgamation of Haumia St, north Tilley Rd and the adjoining part of Te Miti St), Avion Terrace, Paraparaumu Beach; and Rainbow Court, Raumati South. All the streets competed strongly, with every group reducing their collective environmental impact. The average reduction in environmental footprint achieved by participants over the nine months of the competition was 20 per cent.

The 2011/12 round of the competition is underway and will run until the end of June 2012.  Streets vying for the $3000 prize money are north Alexander Road, Raumati Beach, Grange Park Avenue, Raumati South and north Wellington Road, Paekākāriki.
