Waikanae Beach pathway consideration
Wednesday 30 January 2013
At its meeting on 12 February the Waikanae Community Board will consider submissions made by residents regarding a proposal for a pathway along a section of Waikanae Beach. The Board will decide whether to support the proposal going to Council for consideration.
The proposed walkway was raised by the Rotary Pathways Trust and Council staff and would be similar to the walkway around Waimea lagoons. The Rotary Pathways Trust provided funding to enable the popular Paraparaumu Beach walkway to be built
Waikanae Community Board Chair Michael Scott says he recognises the benefits the Rotary Pathways Trust has provided to the community and their interest in this proposal but believes it is quite different to the Paraparumu Beach walkway.
“This proposed walkway would go through dunes and between the beach and residential houses so we need to take into account the needs of all groups in a community when considering such a venture.”
Mr Scott says the Community Board asked Council staff to obtain feedback regarding the proposal from residents who would be directly affected.
“There have been concerns raised and these will need to be considered alongside those who have stated their support for the proposal. This feedback will be presented to the Community Board on 12 February when they will make a recommendation to council.”
