Council of Elders

The Council of Elders (COE) was established in 2008 as an independent voice for older people in the community.  Its key role is to advise the Council and the community on issues that concern and affect older people.

Other roles are to:

  • act as an information conduit for older people
  • make submissions on Council polices and plans
  • provide an overview of all projects that come out of the Older Persons Forums
  • consult with the wider community on issues affecting older people and to formally report back to Council.

The 16 member group is currently chaired by Jill Stansfield and supported by the Council staff.

The Council of Elders meets monthly from February to December at the Council's Emergency Operations Centre in Paraparaumu.

The Seniors Expo, held in Waikanae in March 2010 and attended by well over 1,000 people, was a major initiative organised by the Council of Elders.  Another initiative is the development of an Older Persons Policy/Action Plan - based on the 10 positive ageing goals.
