Who is Eligible to Vote?

For local authority elections there are two rolls from which voter eligibility is confirmed.
Residential Roll
You are automatically on if you are on the Parliamentary roll for an address within the Kapiti Coast District Council area. You do not need to take any further action if your details are correct on the parliamentary roll. The Electoral Enrolment Centre, who are responsible for the Parliamentary roll and supply this data to the council, will be commencing an enrolment update campaign on 5 July 2010.
Ratepayer Roll
There are several ways to be included on this roll, but you must confirm your details each election year to remain on that roll. The criteria are:
- you live and are on the Parliamentary roll at an address outside Kāpiti and you also pay rates on a property to Kāpiti Coast District Council
- you pay rates on more than one property in Kāpiti and they are in different community board areas (you will be able to vote for the different community boards)
- a firm, company, corporation or other legal entity pays rates on a property in the Kāpiti Coast District. In this case the entity may nominate a person to be enrolled on its behalf. The nominee, however, must themselves reside, and be on a Parliamentary Roll, outside the Kāpiti Coast District or the community board area of the property they are nominee for.
Kids Voting
Kāpiti Coast District Council will participate in the Kids Voting programme for the 2010 local authority elections. View information about the Kids Voting programme here.
