Services

Kerbside services

A lot of our rubbish can be recycled. When we recycle, less waste goes to landfill and this is good for the planet!

We follow a different model for kerbside collection services to a number of other councils around the country. Since 2013, these services have been provided to Kāpiti residents solely by independent operators. Our role is to monitor all collectors for their compliance to our licence conditions and the Solid Waste Bylaw.

Rubbish and recycling collectors

There are four private rubbish and recycling collectors licensed by the council to operate in the district:

What service they provide

Collectors are required to provide waste and recycling collection for their residential customers. The price customers pay for rubbish bags and wheelie bins for waste includes the cost of a recycling service.

For waste: all collectors provide a wheelie bin. Envirowaste (aka Budget Waste) also offers pre-paid yellow rubbish bags, sold in local supermarkets and dairies.

For recyclables: Envirowaste and Low Cost Bins provide a wheelie bin for paper/cardboard, plastic and cans, along with a separate crate for glass items. Waste Management and Lucy's Bins provide one crate for all recyclables.

Upcoming changes to kerbside services

We require the companies that collect your rubbish and recycling at the kerbside to keep us updated on any changes they make to their services. Here is some information on the changes we know are coming up.

Recycling changes for rubbish bag users
Envirowaste is establishing a new recycling system for their rubbish bag customers.

Before:

Rubbish bag customers used one green crate for all their recycling.

Now:

These customers are now using a 240L wheelie bin for non-glass recyclables and a crate for glass items (emptied on alternate weeks). There is no charge for the bins - the cost of recycling collection is covered by the price of rubbish bags.

How the change is happening:

Envirowaste has been collecting existing crates from all rubbish bag users since early November and will continue to do so until Friday 6 January. If you haven't got your new wheelie bin and crate yet, please call Envirowaste on 0800 438 224 or email otaki@envirowaste.co.nz (include full address, full name & phone number).

Collection of old crates for all recyclables:

The company will stop collecting crates containing all recycling (glass, plastics, cans, paper/cardboard) from Monday 9 January. Only the new wheelie bin for non-glass recyclables and the crate for glass items will be collected.

Waste wheelie bin customers:

The new recycling system is already being used successfully by Envirowaste and Low Cost Bins customers who use wheelie bins, rather than rubbish bags, for their waste.

Advantages of the new recycling system:

  • The extra wheelie bin for non-glass recyclables will mean more items are recycled rather than going to landfill.
  • Light recyclables aren't blown around the streets on windy days, as the wheelie bins have lids.

If you are a customer of Lucy’s Bins – please check with Lucy’s Bins when your collection day is.

Rubbish bags, wheelie-bins and recycling crates must be on the kerbside before 7am on your collection day, as collections start at 7am. Rubbish and recyclables are collected by different trucks and collection times may vary from week to week.

Recyclable items can be dropped off at a local transfer station free-of-charge.

If you are in Kāpiti on weekends/holidays only, please remember that under the bylaw you are only allowed to put your rubbish and recycling out the day before your collection day (after 1 pm) – if waste is put out too early, it can lead to pollution of your neighbourhood and/or recyclables blowing around the street. Warnings or fines can be issued.

If this isn't possible, please take your weekend rubbish and recycling to the transfer stations at Ōtaki and Otaihanga (open 7 days a week to 5pm). Or ask your neighbours/friends to put your rubbish and recycling out on the correct collection day for you.

Public holidays

Kerbside services continue as normal except for Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Good Friday. Wheelie bin collections may also vary on public holidays.

Collectors are required to publicise alternative collection arrangements. If you are unsure, please contact your collector.
