It was a Family Funday with wheelbarrow races, egg-and-spoon and sack races, “like what we used to do when we were kids,” as gardener Yvonne van Leeuwen put it. Sand saucers were a surprise hit with the kids and the barbecue and salads included zucchini, tomatoes and herbs from the garden. The best part was seeing new faces from the neighbourhood – it takes more than a few people to make a community garden work. An added bonus was a generous donation of a dozen or so blueberry bushes, which will be planted at the next working bee.

Membership is $20 per household per year which covers the lease of the land, the water bill, plants and other materials etc – as Yvonne puts it, “With herbs at $4 a packet in the supermarket, that’s got to be worth it.”
