FREE WORKSHOPS: SEPTEMBER 

Monday September 3, 10-12am: Worm whispering: Worm farms are a great way to process kitchen scraps into black gold for the garden. Find out what they need and how to build a simple worm farm. Plus seasonal gardening tasks for spring. Bring along your gloves if you have some and any questions about worms or composting.

Saturday, September 15, 9-11am: Buiding raised beds: A great design using recycled materials where possible. At Raumati Village Community Garden, behind Thrifty Place op-shop, 10 Weka Rd Raumati Beach. Bring tools.

Saturday September 29, 2-3.30pm: Filling raised beds on a budget: Find out how to fill raised beds using no-dig methods, using free materials wherever possible. At Raumati Village Community Garden, behind Thrifty Place op-shop, 10 Weka Rd Raumati Beach. Bring gloves and a barrow if you can!  

Sunday September 30, 1.30-3pm: Spring seedlings: Make your own plastic-free plant pots and sow sunflowers, pumpkin, zucchini and beans - some to take home and some to plant out in the garden once things warm up. At Matai Community Garden, Raumati - this community garden is tucked behind Kāpiti Gallery and Matai Reserve playground. Meet on the last Sunday of each month, 1.30-3pm, followed by a cuppa. Bring gloves and tools if you have them.

OCTOBER: FREE WORKSHOPS

Monday October 1, 10-12am: Seeds and cuttings: Grow plants for free (or very cheap). Choose cuttings from the community garden’s collection of herbs and drought-resistant plants to take home. Plus seasonal gardening tasks for spring. Bring seeds to sow and share. At Kāpiti Community Garden Centre, 15 Ngahina St Paraparaumu (between the Library and the Aquatic Centre), a social, relaxed garden group meets on the first Monday of every month for a workshop and garden bee. Children are welcome.

Saturday October 20, 10am-1pm: Paekākāriki School Plant Sale: Best value on the Coast for seedlings and plants, see the school's thriving community garden and learn about the Potty Potters group. Wellington Rd, Paekākāriki.

Sunday October 28, 1.30-3pm: It's all about tomatoes (and zucchini): They're everybody's favourite summer crop- but tomatoes are not always a doddle to grow in our climate. Find out how to make your harvest a success. At Matai Community Garden, Raumati - this community garden is tucked behind Kāpiti Gallery and Matai Reserve playground. Meet on the last Sunday of each month, 1.30-3pm, followed by a cuppa. Bring gloves and tools if you have them.

NOVEMBER: FREE WORKSHOPS

Saturday November 3, 2-3.30pm: Planting tomatoes and capsicum: Learn how to give these summer favourites what they need, including installing built-in irrigation at time of planting to make summer watering a breeze. At Raumati Village Community Garden, behind Thrifty Place op-shop, 10 Weka Rd Raumati Beach.

Monday November 5, 10-12am: Tomatoes, beans and pumpkins: We’ll be planting out these summer staples - learn what it takes to make your harvest a success. Bring gloves if you have them. Sunday November 25, 1.30-3pm: Planting summer crops: Ready for summer! Staggering plantings means crops are ready in a useful stream rather than a glut/famine situation. See our sunken pot drip irrigation system in action. At Matai Community Garden, Raumati - this community garden is tucked behind Kāpiti Gallery and Matai Reserve playground. Meet on the last Sunday of each month, 1.30-3pm, followed by a cuppa. Bring gloves and tools if you have them.

DECEMBER: FREE WORKSHOPS

Saturday 1 December, 2-3.30pm: Planting beans, pumpkins and salad crops: Now the soil has warmed up, it's time to get these into the ground. Give them good compost and room to sprawl...At Raumati Village Community Garden, behind Thrifty Place op-shop, 10 Weka Rd Raumati Beach.

Monday, December 3: Simple irrigation hacks: Set up your garden now for super-convenient, super efficient watering over the dry months; learn about ollas, seep hoses and more. Plus we’ll be planting the zucchini bed. Bring gloves if you have them. At Kāpiti Community Centre Garden, 15 Ngahina St Paraparaumu (between the Library and the Aquatic Centre), a social, relaxed garden group meets on the first Monday of every month for a workshop and garden bee. Children are welcome. 

Friday 14 December, 6-8pm: Salad days: Casual Christmas fish and chips. Come to the garden with your takeaways of choice and wind down before all the Christmas craziness. Games for kids, and free garden salad to go with the greasies! At Matai Community Garden, Raumati - this community garden is tucked behind Kāpiti Gallery and Matai Reserve playground.
