The Matai Road Greener Neighbourhood is going strong with a huge amount of collective energy going into their community garden. Last month they held their third working bee which involved repurposing old bath tubs to make planters and deconstructing a fence to build garden beds, they even managed to knock up a table just in time for afternoon tea.
The vegetables aren’t quite ready yet, but the group is already reaping other rewards for their efforts. This fabulous initiative recently received the runner up award in the Heritage and Environment category of the 2015 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards. These awards aptly acknowledge the efforts of volunteers who make great things happen in the community. Well done to the Matai Road team. For Keep NZ Beautiful week, the neighbourhood also got together to clean up their street collecting the equivalent of two big bags full of rubbish. See some great pictures on the Greener Neighbourhoods blog.
