Computers in the Library

Kāpiti Coast District Libraries offer free computer and WiFi access at all locations.

We provide free computing and internet access via the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa (APNK) at all four of our branches. You do not need to be a library member to access the internet.

Chrome Stations and Chromebooks are available for customer use and are installed with frequently used apps including Facebook, Gmail, and Youtube.

There is a basic text editor installed on all Chrome devices. But if you wish to create and edit documents with more advanced software there are two online productivity suites of software available: G Suite (Google) and Office Online (Microsoft).

G Suite - Anyone with a Gmail account can access these applications, which include Google Docs, Google Sheets, and many more. Most document types, including Office files (Word, Excel, etc.) can be viewed and edited with Google apps.

Office Online - This is Microsoft's online equivalent to their well-known Office suite of applications. To use Office Online, you just need to set up a Microsoft account, and you don't even need a Microsoft email address to register.

Free wifi access is available, during opening hours, at all libraries.

Use of the computers is on a first come, first served basis. Sessions are 30 minutes each.

A4 printing in black and white or colour is available from Chromebooks and wifi at a cost of 20c per page (black and white) $1.00 (colour).

Aotearoa Peoples Network Kaharoa reserves the right to prevent access to objectionable material.

Acceptable Use of Internet on Public Computers and WiFi

Kāpiti Coast District Libraries offers Internet access to its customers. The Internet is a global electronic network of ideas, images and commentary that enhances resources already available in the Library.

Customers who use the Internet/public computers in the Library must agree to abide by this Acceptable Use of Internet/Public Computers Policy and the Library’s policies.

In accepting this policy the user agrees to:

  • not visit internet sites that contain obscene, hateful, pornographic or otherwise illegal material
  • not use the computer to perpetrate any form of fraud, or software, film or music piracy
  • not use the internet to send offensive or harassing material to other users
  • comply with the copyright laws of New Zealand
  • not to hack into unauthorised areas
  • not to introduce any form of malicious software into the network

Users should also note:

  • The Internet offers access to a wealth of information that is personally, professionally and culturally enriching. It may also offer access to information that is inaccurate, incomplete or dated, and some sources may be offensive, disturbing or illegal.
  • Material accessed on the internet by customers is passed through Aotearoa People’s Network Kakaroa’s ( APNK) internet filter. Requests can be made to APNK to block or unblock internet sites as outlined in their Public Internet Use Policy and Practice.
  • The Library affirms that it is the responsibility of parents/guardians to determine and monitor their children’s use of the Library’s resources, including use of the Internet.
  • Kāpiti Coast District Council maintains the right to monitor the volume of internet and network traffic, together with the internet sites visited. The specific content of any transactions will not be monitored unless  there is a suspicion of improper use.
  • Failure to use Internet access according to these rules may result in revocation of Internet use privileges, library privileges and/or criminal prosecution at Kāpiti Coast District Libraries sole discretion.
