The Waikanae Library and the Mahara Gallery have plans to upgrade their respective facilities.
The District's Public Gallery, Mahara Gallery, sits adjacent to the Waikanae Public Library. Together they form a gateway to Mahara Place.
The buildings were not designed for their present uses, and require upgrades so that they can provide the professional and community services that are to be expected from a Public Gallery and Public Library.
In addition there is scope for the redevelopment to contribute to a cultural precinct including the Te Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai marae, and the revitalisation of Mahara Place and the Waikanae township.
The Council and Mahara Gallery have been working together on the redevelopment of the Waikanae Library and the Public Gallery.
The Council has committed to leading the redevelopment project, and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Mahara Gallery Trust and the Field Collection Trust regarding the Mahara Gallery upgrade.
