From 10 am on Monday 1 July, Waikanae’s library and customer services will begin operating from 9 Mahara Place (formerly the Artel Gallery) for the next few years. There will be more books available, more room for browsing, full customer services and better facilities.
Service that will be available
The new library offers full library and customer services. There will be WiFi and a computer suite, reading room, a children’s area and more books available.
It’ll be open from 9-5 Monday to Friday and 10-4 on Saturdays.
Health and safety
Before we signed the contract we had tests completed to check the premises were structurally sound and offered a healthy and safe environment for customers. The tests did find asbestos in the ceiling, which was removed.
We have also re-painted the building, improved security and removed asbestos, which we found in the ceiling when we carried out the building inspections. We’ve also installed some soft furnishings and furniture as well as hardware and electrics to run the IT and customer services.
Long term plan for Waikanae Library
No decisions have been made on the future of the building at this stage.
The Council continues to look into different options for a permanent library service in Waikanae. We plan to hold discussions with the community in the near-future about what these services could look like.
