Community emergency hubs
After an earthquake, where would you go to ask for and offer help?
In a disaster, such as a big earthquake, there is likely to be widespread damage to power lines, water pipes, buildings, roads, and phone networks. Emergency services will be dealing with the most urgent matters, so the people we live nearest to will be our most immediate and ongoing source of support.
Your local Community Emergency Hub is a place where people in your neighbourhood can go to support each other and work out what to do next.
Once you've checked on your household and neighbours, you and your family can go to your local Community Emergency Hub to:
- ask for and offer help by sharing skills and resources among the community
- share and find information about what's happening in the local area
- start organising the clean-up of the community
- be in the company of others facing a similar situation.
Community Emergency Hubs are opened and run by community members, without official assistance. Neighbours support neighbours by using the skills and resources that exist in the local area. Together, we can get through a disaster.
Staff at the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) work with communities to provide training and guidance on how to run a Community Emergency Hub. WREMO hosts Hub exercise events which use a real-time earthquake scenario to practise how to respond as a community.
WREMO leads and coordinates emergency management services on behalf of the nine councils in the Wellington Region. Find out more on their website.
