Water supply
There will be no disruption to drinking water supply and wastewater services. These are essential services that Council will continue to deliver throughout all levels of response.
The COVID-19 virus has not yet been detected in drinking water, and WHO considers the risk to water supplies is low. Chlorine is known to effectively kill viruses – all our public drinking water supplies are chlorinated, high-intensity UV treated and pH corrected.
You can continue to use and drink tap water as usual.
Using water in buildings that have been closed
With community facilities/businesses closed during the COVID-19 Alert Level 4, there may be drinking water quality issues as normal service activities resume. This is most likely to be when water is used for the first time, as the water may have been sitting idle in your pipes for four weeks, and stagnated or deteriorated. The Ministry of Health (MOH) recommends sufficiently flushing all your taps so that the water is clear or appears normal.
Read more in the MOH's COVID-19 Drinking water advice – returning to normal service.
