Careful bulb selection means big savings
We can buy the standard incandescent bulbs for between 50 cents to $1-00 each or an LED bulb for $14- $18. They produce similar amount of light, the incandescent has a short life and the LED will last for 12 years plus. So it all comes down to the running costs.
Consumer NZ recently did a review of how they compare.
“Let’s compare a mid-range LED to a standard incandescent bulb.
The LED has the same brightness as a 60 watt incandescent bulb but draws only 9.5 watts. The LED costs $18.00 and has a lifespan of 15000 hours while the incandescent costs 50 cents but last 1000 hours. If the light is on for three hours each day the incandescent will use $17.08 worth of electricity per year compared to $2.70 for the LED.
That’s a saving of $14.38 per year, so the LED will pay for itself in a little over a year and will keep going for another 12 years at the 3 hours per day, while the incandescent will need to be replaced yearly and cost more to run.”
