Repair Cafe Ōtaki 2019
Repair Cafe Ōtaki, Saturday 19 October, 10am-2pm, Ōtaki Memorial Hall
A Repair Café is a meeting place where people repair things together. You’ll find expert volunteers with repair skills in all kinds of areas along with the tools and materials to repair or to help you make any repairs you need. We can help you with clothes, small furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, sharpening your knives and tools, crockery, small appliances, toys, or anything that is broken/not working as it should is. Best of all it’s free of charge!
We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even things with almost nothing wrong, which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair. The trouble is, lots of people have forgotten that they can repair things themselves or they no longer know how.
"Repair isn't just about keeping objects from landfill, which is downstream waste," says Rachel Benefield, Repair Cafe co-organiser. "Upstream waste from a new replacement toaster is the plastic and metal product offcuts. the packaging, polystyrene, plastic, card and the carbon footprint getting it to NZ, the people cost of unfair labour, the pollution of rivers and streams beside the factory. All of this can amount to 70 times more waste than the original broken toaster. It's important when we do buy new things that we check if they can be mended later - can it be unscrewed and mended? Buy for life!"
Repairs can save money and resources, as well as help minimize CO2 emissions and landfill. But above all, our Repair Café just wants to show our community how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is.
Repair Café is also a great way to put our community in touch with each other in a new way. You will discover that a lot of know-how and practical skills can be found close to home, right here at the Repair Café. There’ll also be presentations on how to shop plastic free, make your own soap and mix your own home made cleaning products.
If you have nothing to repair, you’re welcome to come along can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee or even lend a hand with someone else’s repair job.
Do you have repairing skills? Can you use a screwdriver or know how to glue things, sew on a button, teach someone how to send a text? Then we would welcome your help. Get in touch and let us know how you could help - email@example.com or by phoning 021 104 2885.
We look forward to meeting you at our Ōtaki Repair Café in 2019, and celebrate together the 10th International Repair Day.
