Matai Community Garden Party
It was a Family Funday with wheelbarrow races, egg-and-spoon and sack races, “like what we used to do when we were kids,” as gardener Yvonne van Leeuwen put it. Sand saucers were a surprise hit with the kids and the barbecue and salads included zucchini, tomatoes and herbs from the garden. The best part was seeing new faces from the neighbourhood – it takes more than a few people to make a community garden work. An added bonus was a generous donation of a dozen or so blueberry bushes, which will be planted at the next working bee.
To find out more about Matai Community Garden see mataicommunitygarden.org or for updates on upcoming activities, join the facebook page. Membership is $20 per household per year which covers the lease of the land, the water bill, plants and other materials etc – as Yvonne puts it, “With herbs at $4 a packet in the supermarket, that’s got to be worth it.”
