MOA Orchard Garden Party
The weather smiled and crowds turned out for Raumati South’s Community Garden Party at MOA orchard, Jeep Rd Domain, on Saturday 24 February.
The afternoon began with a walking talking workshop from Cree Hatfield, orchard co-ordinator, looking at the standout performers when it comes to trees.
Her picks of what has done best at the orchard:
- ‘Hawera’ (self-fertile, similar in flavour and texture to an Omega, ripens January)
- ‘Dan’s Early’ (red skin, yellow flesh, heavy cropper, popular texture and flavour, ripens before Christmas)
- Stanley Prune (yellow flesh, purple skin, very sweet, self-fertile, ripens late Feb.)
Peach: ‘Gordon’s Glory’ (clingstone, similar to ‘Golden Queen’ but highly productive and very resistant to leaf curl)
Apple: ‘Monty’s Surprise’ (huge fruit, strong flavour, great nutritional qualities).
Green Gardener Hannah Zwartz demonstrated summer pruning on one of the plum trees, before the cabaret began. Local talent galore, of all ages and musical persuasions, took to the stage and entertained the crowds who lined the slopes on their rugs and blankets.
