A lot of our rubbish can be recycled, which means less waste goes to the landfill and this is great for the planet!

We follow a different model for kerbside collection services to a number of other councils around the country. Since 2013, these services have been provided to Kāpiti residents solely by independent operators. Our role is to monitor all collectors to make sure they comply with our licence conditions and the Solid Waste Bylaw. Kerbside household rubbish and recycling collection is not covered by your rates.

Rubbish and recycling collectors

There are four private rubbish and recycling collectors licensed to operate in our District:

UPCOMING CHANGES FOR YELLOW BAG USERS

Envirowaste (also trading as Clean Green and Budget Waste), one of four providers operating on the Coast, has chosen to no longer sell the combination yellow rubbish bag and recycling bin service. This means plastic rubbish bag users will need to look into an alternative rubbish and recycling service.

If you use yellow rubbish bags, you'll get a letter from your provider outlining the changes, what it means for you, and the key dates you need to know. If you don't get this letter, or have any questions, please call Envirowaste on 0800 224 767. You'll need to look into the alternative options available and decide which suits you best.

ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS

Sign up for a new service: If you'd like to keep your current recycling service that you get with bags, you'll need to sign up for a new service.

Use the transfer station: you can dispose of your rubbish and recycling at the Ōtaki or Otaihanga transfer stations (recycling can be dropped off free of charge), approx $4.40-$5 to drop off a standard 60litre bag of rubbish.

Share with friends, family or neighbours: talk to a neighbour, friends or family about sharing bins.

Envirowaste's key dates for bag users

  • Monday 19 March - yellow bags will stop being sold in stores
  • From Monday 26 March onwards - Envirowaste will carry out the final empty and removal of the recycling bin and/or crate, which is part of the combined refuse bag service.
  • Friday 4 May - final collection of yellow bags.

Our questions and answers cover off some important information, including why Council doesn't deliver this service. Check them out for more detailed info.

Your options for rubbish and recycling services

Collectors are required to provide waste and recycling collection for their urban residential customers. The price you pay for your waste service includes the cost of a recycling service.

For waste: all collectors provide a wheelie bin service. If you choose not to have a bin service, you can dispose of your waste at the Ōtaki or Otaihanga transfer stations.

For recyclables: EnviroWaste and Low Cost Bins provide a wheelie bin for paper/cardboard, plastic and cans, along with a separate crate for glass items. Waste Management and Lucy's Bins provide one crate for all recyclables. Alternatively, you can take recycling to a transfer station free of charge. Check out what can be recycled in Kāpiti here.

If your recycling has been missed or you're unsure when to put out your recycling bin and crate, please contact your collector directly. Lucy's Bins has a backdoor collection service - contact them to find out when your collection day is.

Waste Management's greenwaste bins are collected on Tuesdays from Ōtaki to Waikanae, and on Fridays from Paraparaumu to Paekākāriki.

Wheelie bins and recycling crates must be on the kerbside before 7am on your collection day, as collections start at 7am. Rubbish and recyclables are collected by different trucks and collection times may vary from week to week.

Recycling can be dropped off at a local transfer station free-of-charge.

If you're in Kāpiti on weekends/holidays only, please remember that under the bylaw you are only allowed to put your rubbish and recycling out the day before your collection day (after 1 pm) – if waste is put out too early, it can lead to pollution of your neighbourhood and/or recyclables blowing around the street. Warnings or fines can be issued.

If this isn't possible, please take your weekend rubbish and recycling to the transfer stations at Ōtaki, Otaihanga and Waikanae (open 7 days a week to 5pm). Or ask your neighbours/friends to put your rubbish and recycling out on the correct collection day for you.

Public holidays

Kerbside services continue as normal except for Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Good Friday. Wheelie bin collections might also vary on public holidays. Collectors are required to publicise alternative collection arrangements. If you are unsure, please contact your collector.
