Water supplies and treatment
Ōtaki water supply
Ōtaki has three ground water bore sources at two water treatment plant sites serving Ōtaki beach, town and areas of the Waitohu Plateau. The groundwater is chlorinated, high-intensity UV treated and pH corrected to ensure clean safe water is available for distribution to Ōtaki and the surrounding area.
A plan of the scheme can be found here.
The estimated population served by the scheme is 5,883.
We have a resource consent to take a total of 11,233 cubic metres of water (from all Ōtaki water supply sources combined) per day.

Hautere/Te Horo water supply
The Hautere/Te Horo community has a restricted water supply from two shallow bores alongside the Otaki River. The water is chlorinated, high-intensity UV treated and pH corrected. The water is supplied in 'units', originally allocated on the basis of farm area. A unit is approximately 1000 litres of water delivered through a restrictor over a 24-hour period. Consumers install their own tank and pump to provide an 'on-demand' supply. Subdivision has resulted in high demand and the supply becoming over subscribed.
A plan of the scheme can be found here.
There are 803 allocated water units.
We have a resource consent to take a total of 1382 cubic metres of water (from all Hautere/Te Horo water supply sources combined) per day.
Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati water supply
The Waikanae Water Treatment Plant was established in 1977 to supply water to Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati. Water is sourced from the Waikanae River and during periods of low river flow ground water from the Waikanae borefield is used to recharge the river. This means we can continue to source water from the river rather than putting bore water into the supply. The ground water bores also provide a backup source should this ever be needed. The water is chlorinated, high-intensity UV treated and pH corrected. Fluoride is also added to this water supply. View more information about fluoridated water here.
A plan of the scheme can be found here.
The estimated population served by the scheme is 38,671.
We have a resource consent to take a total of 23,000 cubic metres of water (from all Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati water supply sources combined) per day.

We secured a site for a future dam to ensure we have a 100 year water solution for Raumati, Paraparaumu and Waikanae. An overview of the Maungakotukutuku Dam site can be found here.
Paekākāriki water supply
The Paekākāriki Water Treatment Plant takes water from two ground water bores near the plant with a backup source from the Wainui Stream (Smith’s Creek). The water is filtered, chlorinated and high-intensity UV treated for distribution to Paekākāriki and the surrounding area. A water supply has been operating at Paekakariki since 1922.
A plan of the scheme can be found here.
The estimated population served by the scheme is 1,593.
We have a resource consent to take a total of 2489 cubic metres of water (from all Paekākāriki water supply sources combined) per day.
Private bores
In addition to Council-operated water supplies, there are many hundreds of private bores throughout the district. View information about the process for installing a private water bore here.
