Funding the arts in Kapiti

Sixteen Kāpiti organisations and individuals have been granted funding for arts projects from the Creative Communities Grant Scheme.

The Academy of Dramatic Arts, Kapiti Chamber Choir, Kakano Films, Otaki Pottery Club, Otaki Village Promotions Group, Mahara Gallery Trust, Paekakariki Station Precinct Trust, Kapiti Concert Orchestra, New Zealand Comedy Trust, Kapiti Primary School Board of Trustees, Kapiti Kids Motivation Trust, Kapiti Music Centre Trust, Paekakariki Informed Community Incorporated and three individuals were successful in their applications for grants which are funded and administrated by Creative New Zealand in partnership with Council.

Projects in this first funding round for the 2014/2015 year have been granted $22,384 in total. A second round will take place in early 2015. Creative New Zealand has provided $40,373 for both funding rounds with Council contributing $4,394.

“The variety and scope of the applicants we had for these grants show just how much the arts are growing in Kāpiti,” Mayor Ross Church says. 

“Funding will result in whole range of projects being carried out that wouldn’t happen otherwise, from kite-making workshops and a kapa haka festival for primary schools to a songwriting camp for 9-12 year olds and comedy acting classes for secondary school students.”

 The three main funding criteria for grants are that a project will:

• create opportunities for our local communities to engage with and participate in arts activities
• support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of our local communities, enriching and promoting their uniqueness and cultural diversity
• enable and encourage young people (under 18 years) to engage with and actively participate in the arts.
