Birgit Moffatt- I am a true Berliner, permanently living in the lower North Island of New Zealand since 2011.
Before then I worked in a government department. Currently I am completing my visual arts degree, majoring in textiles, at Whitireia Polytechnic in Porirua, New Zealand. Although always attracted by nature, living on a rural property surrounded by the native bush raised my awareness of its beauty but also its vulnerability.
Through my husband’s origins, I was introduced to Māori culture and art. I was fascinated by the beautiful and high quality works of traditional Māori flax weaving, which was my first step on my journey into the world of fibres. Organic textures, colours and forms inspire me to manipulate fibres into the desired form. I am working predominantly with natural and renewable eco fibres such as wool, silk and flax and other natural materials. My work stems from the appreciation of the land and their people
