Kāpiti Arts Guide Listing no. 46
A long time ago, I took up photography and became a working part-time pro photographer, doing press, weddings, shows and festivals and was inspired by Ansel Adams black and white (B&W) work. Eventually, having not touched a pencil for four decades (since school days), I picked up a pencil and realised that something strange had happened – I could still draw!
Several years later, having moved to New Zealand, I had a quiet day so I picked up a mechanical pencil and drew a landscape that actually resembled the original: I’ve not stopped since! My favourite subjects are humans, as in portraits, and my preferred media are graphite and charcoal, which given my love of the old B&W portrait photos from Hollywood… isn’t all that surprising!
I’m inspired by the work of American artist J.D. Hillberry – and hope to one day approach his standard. I’m extending that to animals now: cats, dogs, gulls – and I still draw the occasional landscape!
