Sarah is an ethnographer, educator, ceramist and photographer, based at Totara Grove Cottage in the beautiful Totara tunnel on Ōtaki Gorge Road. She enjoys the dynamic and intuitive nature of working with clay and using materials from her surrounding environment in the firing process. Sarah makes handbuilt ceramics, both functional, yet beautiful, and artistic pieces both in 3D and 2D forms. Most recently she been exploring pit firing, and breaking works, arranging in new forms, and joining them using the Japanese art of kintsugi. Photography is her first art, which she has explored and created in academic, work, and artistic contexts. Her black and white & colour film photography, explores a wide range of themes, concepts, and subject mater- from the everyday to surrealism. Sarah’s art is influenced by her work as an ethnographer and background in visual culture, and she is inspired by a range of influences from both culture and nature.
