Murray Edwin Hopping
Kāpiti Arts Guide Listing no. 44
I began my adventure with ceramics in the early 1970s when emphasis was mainly on wheel-thrown domestic ware using stoneware clays and high-fired and glazes in shades of muted browns and greens. In my small studio in Waikanae I now use a selection of white and brown clays and low temperatures glazes that produce more intense colours in the finished pot.
My work includes hand built window vases with textured walls, candle holders with inlaid design, colourful vases and pitcher jugs, and wall plaques assembled from hand-made tiles. My garden art includes wheel-thrown dragons for incense and citronella, bird feeders, and water features. I also combine wheel and slab techniques to make bases for table lamps.
