Kāpiti Arts Trail: Guide Listing no. 7
Artistic medium: Sculpture, Multimedia painting
All New Zealanders are connected to this country: we’ve all migrated here at some point in our collective histories. There were different vehicles, and everyone has different stories, many of which have interwoven over the decades. I combine nautical and aeronautical forms to evoke these themes of navigation, migration, and cross-cultural connections.
My own family’s histories of journeys to this land have forged many of the ongoing themes in my work. The ocean-centred environment and rich Māori culture of the East Coast, where I grew up, are strong elements I still draw on today. My mother’s family emigrated from the Shetland Islands making their new home in Island Bay, Wellington. To embody these cross-cultural stories my works are mostly constructed with up-cycled cedar, rimu, plywood, canvas, aluminium and copper, then finished with oil, wax, paint, bitumen, and sometimes fibreglass. I often layer different timbers to recreate shiplap, parquet, woven tukutuku and weatherboard surface structures.
