Murray Hopping, Rosebank Pottery
Kāpiti Arts Trail: Guide Listing no. 75
Artistic medium: Ceramics/Pottery
I began my adventure with ceramics in the early 1970s when emphasis was mainly on wheel-thrown domestic ware using stoneware clays and high-fired glazes in shades of muted browns and greens. In my small studio in Waikanae, I now use a selection of white and brown clays and low temperatures glazes that produce more intense colours in the finished pot. My work includes hand-built window vases with textured walls, decorative jugs, beaked pitchers, large bottles, and blossom vases in varying sizes. Currently, I am exploring engobe decoration with emphasis on naturally occurring colourants such as ilmenite, rutile, and iron oxides. My garden art includes wheel-thrown dragons for incense and citronella, and wall-mounted whimsical sculptures.
