Shirley Petkau | Kokopelli Art Studio
Kāpiti Arts Trail: Listing no. 76
Artistic medium: Painting, Abstract
Demonstration time: Throughout both weekends
Shirley began painting in the early 60s when her focus was landscapes. However, due to commitments to family and career, there was no time to engage in this activity until recently. In 2013 Shirley retired from her career with a major corporation in Phoenix, Arizona.
She and her husband Slim subsequently immigrated to New Zealand. They were most fortunate to find a property in Waikanae which also housed an office that Slim converted into a comfortable studio. Shirley decided that landscapes no longer interested her so began a new phase.
Her artist instincts have resulted in abstract paintings in vibrant colors and unique free-flowing shapes that have won her awards such as from 2017 Rotary Art Show. She encourages viewers to bring their own interpretation of what they see in her paintings. Shirley has done commission work for clients in Canada, the US and New Zealand.
