Sushei Hamlin-Sullivan Studio and Gallery
Kāpiti Arts Guide: Listing no. 5
Artistic medium: Painting
Demonstration times: 2–4pm each day
Sushei Hamlin-Sullivan’s paintings are robust and vibrant, forcibly connecting us with the shocking beauty of our natural environment. Textured and colourfully vibrant, Sushei entices the viewer to feel, touch and become involved in each work. The drama Sushei creates in her work is not in the content of what she paints, but rather in her interpretation. Her paintings investigate the history of representation and the mechanics of art making as well as painting the beauty of the natural environment in an emotionally joyful way. Her uplifting and beautiful paintings suggest a free spirit living a colourful life.
Since graduating with a BA Contemporary Art & BFA Fine Arts (Honours), Sushei has lived her art, exhibiting, teaching, holding artist in residencies, mentoring and volunteering within the visual arts community. In 2018 Sushei made the big decision to return to New Zealand to care for her aging mother who lives in Kāpiti, re-establishing her art studio & gallery at the historic Holtom's Building in Paekākāriki where she now works. Sushei's work is held in both private and public collections within New Zealand and internationally.
