Tom Beauchamp | Natural Build Sustainable Sculpture
Kāpiti Arts Guide: Listing no. 52
Artistic medium: Clay, Earth, Wood, Fibre
Demonstration time: 3pm each day
Good planets are hard to find. Settling down with a young family in Ōtaki, Tom has gone full circle in a way, returning to his sculptural roots with an emphasis on exploring sustainability and the built environment through materials, content and context. Wood, aggregates and binders of clay and lime are combined with different fibres including straw and harakeke to create representational and abstract work.
Originally Tom graduated with a degree in sculpture, then travelled and worked as a commercial sculptor in New Orleans and London where he became interested in performing arts through mask making, puppetry, and circus. Upon returning to New Zealand Tom did a masters in theatre arts, then founded a circus theatre company (Fuse Circus). Recently Tom ran away from the circus to be an Eco builder, his artistic work is a whimsical, experimental extension of this.
