Joe Buchanan | Diatom Press
Kāpiti Arts Trail: Listing 1
Artistic medium: Printmaking, drawing
In an old railway hut set in a fabulous cottage garden in Paekākāriki, Joe works with an array of traditional printing presses, surrounded by inks, trays of type, and Japanese wood carving tools to produce exquisite linocut and letterpress prints. A marine biologist, Joe has been printmaking for over 20 years, honing his skills designing and producing pamphlets and posters for various human rights campaigns.
Drawing from life, his linocuts often feature botanical themes and marine algae, including macroalgae - visible to the naked eye- and the fascinating and important diatoms his studio is named for.
You can hear Joe talk about his work in a radio interview (10:43)
