Tom Beauchamp | Natural Build Raw Earth Designs
Kāpiti Arts Trail: Listing 86
Artistic medium: Sculpture, woodwork
In this integrated artform, wood, aggregates, and binders of clay and lime are combined with different fibres including straw and harakeke, to create representational and abstract work in stand-alone pieces or feature walls and in-built sculpture.
Originally graduating with a degree in sculpture, Tom travelled and worked as a commercial sculptor in New Orleans and London. Becoming interested in performing arts through mask-making, puppetry, and circus, he completed a masters in theatre arts and founded the Fuse Circus theatre company.
Tom has returned to his sculptural roots with an emphasis on exploring sustainability and the built environment through materials, content, and context. He brings this emphasis to both his current work as an eco-builder, and his artistic work, which is a whimsical, experimental extension of this.
