Kāpiti Arts Trail: Guide Listing no. 20
Artistic medium: Painting
Ashling is a self-taught artist and works in her little studio in Paraparaumu Beach. She has entered the art scene relatively recently and has already had considerable interest in her works.
Ashling likes experimenting with different styles and techniques to bring out the individuality in each work. Her paintings often portray portraits of the people she interacts with, as she find stories of individuals fascinating. Her style varies, from juxtaposition to contemporary realism, all depending on the subject. She often tries to portray people as how she sees them, to create them in their own unique light. The creation involves painting in layers, and each layer may change radically from the last. It’s as if a story is added to each person as the painting progresses. Her style and palette may change according to the subject, and each painting is tailor-made. She celebrates people and their dreams and believes art needs to be personal.
