Artistic medium: Painting
Caroline Beaufort-Puna has been a practising artist and art teacher at Kāpiti College since 2001. She has also lived on the Kāpiti coast all her life. She draws inspiration from local history and stories of well-known chiefs such Te Rauparaha, whom her children are descendants of. Her latest prints have been influenced by preserving those stories and honouring those that came before us, including extinct birds such as the Huia. “They lived in a time where bird species were abundant and the dawn chorus was like a symphony.” Hemi Matenga is depicted surrounded by birds thanking him for having the foresight donate 330 acres of land for conservation purposes in the 1800s. Now the Hemi Matenga track is surrounded with bush-clad hills and abundant birdlife.
