Kāpiti Arts Trail: Guide Listing no. 38
Artistic medium: Painting
I was born and raised in rural South Waikato after my parents emigrated to the area from the Netherlands in 1981. Creativity and art were major factors in our upbringing. We were brought up without television, were taught many homemade skills, and used recycled materials wherever we could. In 2004 I obtained a degree in Interior Architecture, then worked as a self-taught artist for 5 years. In 2010 I moved to Dunedin to study a Master of Fine Arts, a self-directed two- year degree.
Elements and principles of both my upbringing and my studies have emerged strongly in my current art practice. My work is site-specific, uses recycled building materials, and explores boundaries between architecture, archaeology, and art. I focus on a given area of land, the history, events, structures, and environment that impact on the site. In response to my findings I produce both small and large works. The final pieces materialise as mixed media works combining drawing, collage, and painting.
