Joe Buchanan, Diatom Press
Kāpiti Arts Trail: Guide Listing no. 3
Artistic medium: Printmaking
Diatom Press is run by scientist and printmaker Joe Buchanan. Joe has a PhD in seaweed or marine macroalgae (you can see it with the naked eye) which fulfilled his childhood ambition of being a marine biologist.
Joe honed his printmaking over several decades designing and producing pamphlets and posters for various human rights campaigns. His letterpress work is done on an 8 x 5 Adana platen press. His linocuts often have a botanical theme. Where possible, Joe draws from life, then transposes his drawings to lino blocks, cuts with Japanese wood carving tools, and prints using a modified French stencil cutting press.
Joe’s most recent works include letterpress and linocuts featuring the poetry of New Zealand writer, Maria McMillan, and a limited edition series of prints of New Zealand native seaweeds. Diatom Press is set up in one of the old railway huts in Joe's mother's Paekākāriki garden.
