Birgit Moffatt Art Studio
Kāpiti Arts Guide: Listing 68
Artistic medium: Fibre and textiles, sculpture
Fantastic fibre art creations, handmade from local flora to the finished artworks, await visitors who take the lovely drive up the Ōtaki Gorge and then onto the tiny bridge over the river up to Birgit’s studio overlooking rural Ōtaki.
Moving to Aotearoa New Zealand from Berlin in 2011, Birgit began her creative journey to encompass a wide range of artforms. She gained a Bachelor of Applied Arts in 2017, majoring in textiles. Birgit exhibits regularly in galleries and major art shows throughout New Zealand, and holds fibre art workshops in those galleries or out of her studio.
Surrounded by native bush, Birgit’s predominant influence is the natural environment and her commitment to sustainability. Her materials are mostly
hand-picked, spun, dyed, and then woven or sewn using natural colouring elements, making clear the connection of the artwork to the whenua.
