Working from her Paraparaumu Beach home studio, Dee creates narrative figurative paintings, which are her best-known works, landscapes, portraits, still life, and abstraction. In her art, Dee explores a range of subjects and styles, using rich colours, mixed media and expressive brush strokes, creating works that are emotional, dreamlike, surreal, and provocative.
Although new on the Arts Trail in 2021, Dee has had an art practice of nearly 40 years in Wellington, Sydney, and Kāpiti. She has a fine arts degree majoring in printmaking and photography and has exhibited in both solo and group shows in Wellington including at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts. She won the Inverlochy Art School’s overall painting award in 2005.
Dee’s interest in narrative art and expressionism stems from a long involvement in theatre and her love of stories. More recently she has been exploring the space between realism and abstraction, and producing digital works using Procreate software.
